PROJECTS COMING SOON

A number of significant projects are in construction today that will be opening within the next few years. Modern streetcar in downtown Fort Lauderdale introduces a new mode of travel operating on rails in-street with mixed traffic. A new concept of congestion management lanes is being introduced on I-595, I-95 and I-75 to provide the option of less congested lanes for a price that varies depending upon the level of congestion at that time. Unlike tolled facilities (Florida’s Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway) the mainlanes will still be available at no charge. In addition to roadways, Port Everglades is expanding its facilities and the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is nearing completion of a new runway and adjacent roadway improvements on US1.

595 Express (Completed in March 2014)
The I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project consists of the reconstruction of the I-595 mainline and associated improvements to frontage roads and ramps from the I-75/Sawgrass Expressway interchange to the I-595/I-95 interchange for a project length of approximately 10.5 miles on I-595 and 2.5 miles on Florida’s Turnpike with an approximate design and construction cost of $1.2 billion. Included in this project is the construction of three full width reversible Express Lanes with ramps connecting directly to I-75 and to Florida’s Turnpike. These reversible Express Lanes will flow east in the morning and west in the afternoon with one electronic toll collection point just west of Flamingo Road.  READ MORE

75 Express
Express lanes are being implemented along 18 miles of the I-75 and SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) corridors, from I-595 in Broward to just south of the SR 836 (Dolphin Expressway) in Miami-Dade. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is working together to implement the project. Features include four variable-priced toll lanes, two in each direction in the median of I-75, with direct connections to Florida’s Turnpike and the Palmetto Expressway. New ramp connections between Florida’s Turnpike and I-75 will provide connectivity for Southwest Broward County. Additional features include the five intermediate express lane connections, transit access for Bus Rapid Transit (in cooperation with transit providers), intelligent transportation/tolling system and noise barrier walls where warranted.  Express buses will connect to the 595 Express buses in Broward County and to the Palmetto Metro-Rail station in Miami-Dade County.  READ MORE

95 Express
The initial phase of the 95 Express congestion-priced managed use lanes operating today between Downtown Miami and the Golden Glades interchange is heavily utilized. The system is considered highly successful including 5 Regional Express Bus Routes, 3+ person carpools, and vanpools which play a key role in managing demand in the corridor. Phase 2 of the original project is now under construction as the lanes are being extended from Golden Glades north to Broward Boulevard. The project will convert the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes into two congestion-priced managed lanes in each direction. Other work includes installing Intelligent Transportation System components, bridge widening, and signage. All Aboard Florida
Florida East Coast Industries is implementing intercity passenger rail from Miami to Orlando with intermediate stations in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. All Aboard Florida, the newly-formed intercity rail service provider will offer business and leisure passengers a high-quality travel experience and viable transportation alternative to Florida’s congested highways and airport terminals. Cost for the entire 3-hour trip between Miami to Orlando is expected to be under $100 for a one-way ticket and about $20 between West Palm Beach and downtown Miami. The target market for this unique service is largely the 94 million visitors who make about 50 million trips between these four destination cities each year. All Aboard Florida will be the first privately owned, operated, and maintained passenger rail system of its kind in the United States. It is expected to cost $1.5 billion to build. The Wave Streetcar
The Wave is a 2.7 mile modern streetcar system that will serve as a local circulator in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. It will have 10 stations reflective of the character of each location with real-time information (technology that communicates when the next vehicle will be arriving at the station) and kiosks displaying destinations, attractions and upcoming events. The streetscape (pedestrian crosswalks, landscape, lighting, and sidewalks) will be improved around the stations. Traffic signalization improvements will help keep the streetcars on schedule for frequency every 7.5 minutes during peak travel times and every 10 minutes during other times. The project is a multi-agency partnership with the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority managing the project implementation and Broward County Transit serving as the ultimate operator. Total cost is estimated to be $147 million. The first 1.4 miles of the Wave will extend from NW 4th Street and Andrews Avenue to south of the Broward County Courthouse and is fully funded. Federal funding to complete the remaining 1.3 miles has been included in President Obama’s new budget proposal. Service begins by 2017. VISIT WEBSITE
