How Do We Get There?

It will take proactive intervention to solve our traffic congestion problems and provide mobility and connectivity for Broward residents. Improvements are expected from projects being completed in the next five years, but these improvements only go so far in addressing our overall transportation challenges over the next 20+ years.

If we don’t take action today, we will continue to pay in time lost sitting in traffic and more pollution from vehicle emissions. If we don’t make transit more accessible and competitive with the automobile, we will pay with lost economic opportunity and longer travel delays. We will pay in more limited access, declining health and more accidents if we don’t make complete streets a reality in more communities. Transportation cost for Broward residents are some of the highest in the nation at 36 percent of our average income. Combined with housing, it takes an average of 62 percent for these basic necessities before we feed our families. Ranked fourth in the nation for pedestrian fatalities, safety for pedestrians continues to challenge us in South Florida.

Clearly, balanced solutions are needed to achieve fiscally responsible and sustainable ways to invest in improvements to our transportation system that work better for us all. The solution to our transportation problems should be:

  • Rational: save us time and money - make it easy to get where we need to go
  • Efficient: make the best of our investment to move people and goods
  • Sustainable: secure operating funds to keep the system up and running smoothly

The Commitment 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan is hard at work evaluating our transportation needs through the year 2040 with a focus on the near-term critical needs. A cost feasible plan prepared by the Florida Department of Transportation shows that not all of our transportation system needs are funded. Transit development plans recently completed by Broward County Transit and the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (operates Tri-Rail) tell us there are not enough funds to cover all our transit needs. The work now underway for Commitment 2040 will tell us just how big the shortfall is for Broward. Shortfall information will be available in the coming months.

By the Fall of 2014, Speak Up Broward will ask for your input on ways to address Broward’s long term transportation needs beyond what the financially feasible plan can support. In the meantime, please take our survey and join our Speakers Bureau. We want to hear from you. [Get Involved]
