MAKING THE CONNECTIONS WORK

Broward Complete Streets Initiative
How we perceive our roadway system may depend on whether we are sitting behind the wheel, or trying to cross the street. The road looks very small when you are trying to get through the light to make it to work or school on time. But if you are waiting for a bus, or trying to get to the other side of the street, it can be a daunting experience. Making the best use of our roadways means making the most of our ability to move people, not vehicles. And, people move about in many different ways. Sure, cars are a big part of the roadway experience, but we need space for people walking, biking and waiting for transit in a safe and convenient location. Livability means a lot of things to a lot of people. Getting to work, doctor’s appointments, school – you name it – are all important to each of our lives each and every day. Finding ways to integrate pedestrian traffic with automobile and transit vehicles is a major challenge for livability and transportation planners.

A “Complete Streets” design provides a transportation facility for the pedestrian, bicyclist, transit vehicles as well as the automobile. The Broward MPO is taking a leadership role to create a safe and efficient transportation network for ALL users of our roadways through the Broward Complete Streets initiative. Having adopted guidelines on July 12, 2012, the Broward MPO is partnering with municipalities to implement Complete Streets projects. Demonstration projects are planned for:

• Hollywood Blvd: 26th Ave to Dixie Hwy (urban setting)
• Sunset Strip: NW 72nd Ave to NW 19th St (suburban setting)

A number of pedestrian and bicycle projects are also in construction throughout Broward as part of the 2035 Transformation Long Range Transportation Plan. Click the following for the 2035 LRTP Bicycle Projects and Pedestrian Projects.

 

Mobility Hubs
Broward’s built environment has developed in a grid pattern with major roadways intersecting every mile or so. Our bus transit service operates on a grid pattern also. What this means for transit is that the most efficient way to run service is to create opportunities for transfers between north-south and east-west bus routes in a safe and comfortable station environment. Mobility hubs are being implemented at two high transfer locations in Broward:

• Broward Boulevard and 1st Street in Downtown Fort Lauderdale
• Hollywood Boulevard and US1

Mobility Hub locations are under review for the Commitment 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan Update and will expand this new connectivity throughout Broward at more locations. Click here for the 2035 Transformation map of Mobility Hubs.
