The Broward MPO recognizes that the car, also known as the single-occupancy vehicle remains the most popular form of transportation in Southeast Florida. However, our roadway system, which has been under development for decades, is virtually built out. Southeast Florida is still growing; we remain a popular travel destination and this will likely lead to greater traffic congestion ultimately impacting our quality of life.

We are completing the last of our highway expansions, constructing tolled express lanes, and completing our local roadway network. With future roadway expansion limited, we are now turning to increasing our capacity through transit and carpools, access management, congestion pricing on express lanes, intelligent information systems, traffic system improvements and electronic signs that provide drivers with travel times and notification of accidents or congestion, real-time traffic management giving travelers accurate and timely information and also helps emergency responders. We are trying to make our roads smarter.

For information on transportation projects that will take place over the next five years, take a look at our Transportation Improvement Program. The plan is updated annually and assigns funding to specific projects.

The American Association of State Highway & Transportation Office (AASHTO) is an association that works together to foster an integrated national transportation system.

Another important partner is the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
