                      BROWARD MPO's BIKE SAFETY CAMPAIGN

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE.  AT LEAST 3 FEET.  IT’S THE LAW!

In an effort to encourage everyone to practice safe behavior and improve the safety of all road users, the Broward MPO, has developed a public education campaign

regarding the 3-Foot Law. The campaign educates motorists about Florida Statute 316.083: Overtaking and Passing, the law states a motorist must pass a bicyclist by no less than 3 feet.

BROWARD COMPLETE STREETS INITIATIVE

The Broward Regional Health Planning Council was awarded a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant to create healthy and safe places in Broward County that are supportive of active lifestyles by “establishing ‘Complete Streets’ community design standards to make streets safe for all users, including those who walk, ride bikes and use public transportation.” As a result of this Transforming Our Community’s Health (TOUCH) Initiative, Broward’s 31 municipalities soon will have the tools necessary to design streets that balance all modes of transportation. Broward MPO, Smart Growth Partnership and Urban Health Partnerships will be working collaboratively to develop and implement the community design standards that encourage complete streets and Smart Growth Cities. The Broward MPO Encourages the Development of Complete Streets

At its May 2011 meeting the Broward MPO took its first step in changing how roads are designed in Broward County.   The MPO Board passed a resolution encouraging cities and implementing agencies to develop their roads as complete streets and to use the Institute of Transportation Engineers’ Guide ”Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares: A Context Sensitive Approach” in this effort.

How Will This Benefit You?

Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users. Pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities must be able to safely move along and across a complete street. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from bus stops and train stations.

How Do We Create Complete Streets?

Creating complete streets means transportation agencies must change their approach to planning, designing or redesigning their roads. They will need to consider bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users first, not last. They will need to think about the capacity not by how many vehicles move through the corridor, but instead by how many people are moving through the corridor.  There is not a one size fits all solution and will have to be considered in the context of the community and the corridor.
