SAFE STREETS AWARDS

Safe Streets Summit, hosted by the Broward MPO, created and elevated a countywide discussion on the economic, health, and safety impacts of Complete Streets. The Safe Streets Awards, announced at the Safe Streets Summit, were an opportunity to highlight jurisdictions that have led by example in creating better streets for all users. Three awards were voted upon by locals, which received a total of 117 votes and nominated 18 jurisdictions as well as county and state roads.

Making Bike Lanes a Big Hit!

The first award, Making Bike Lanes a Big Hit, had 10 contenders that made up 85% of the vote; these included: Coral Springs, Tamarac, FDOT, Hollywood, Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Weston, Lauderdale by the Sea, and Wilton Manors.

The winner, City of Fort Lauderdale, has worked exceptionally hard with FDOT to assure a quality bicycle facility was established within their community. Karen Mendrala received this award on behalf of the City of Fort Lauderdale. The City is leading their counterparts by example and, with their recently adopted Multi-model Connectivity Program under way, will likely be positioning themselves for many more awards to come.
