THE DEADLINE FOR HEALTY COMMUNITY ZONES IS CLOSING FAST - SUBMIT BY JUNE 1

In late April, Broward Regional Health Planning Council's TOUCH Program (Partnerships in Transforming Our Community's Health) launched Broward County's first ever Healthy Community Zones Initiative (HCZ).

The response from Broward County communities, local governments, community organizations and champions has been very positive and enthusiastic! BRHPC, the TOUCH Program and all our HCZ Partners would like to remind you that the application deadline ends June 1st, at which time the selection process for our final HCZ's will begin!

The purpose of the HCZ program is to foster a shared vision of health, economic development, and education for Broward County by collaboratively envisioning, designing and implementing community improvements in the four TOUCH Focus Areas: Tobacco Free Living, Active Living & Healthy Eating, Clinical & Community Linkages, and Healthy & Safe Physical Environments.

An HCZ is an area designation where you would like your existing community resources and activities to be connected to coordinated partnerships for improving community's health. The HCZ designation will bring free technical assistance up to $100,000.00 of in-kind services through various coordinated initiatives and partnerships. This will allow your existing efforts to scale up and become more effective, while positively impacting the wellbeing and health of the residents in your community. At least four communities across Broward will be selected and receive the HCZ designation.

To qualify for the HCZ initiative, the Broward community should have a demonstrated need to improve health (check for your qualifying zip code online using the link below). The area size may vary from 5 to20 blocks and must contain a middle or high school. Areas with a current YMCA before- and after-school program will receive preference for HCZ designation.

Visit www.BRHPC.org/hcz for more information, details, maps and the online application form.

The online application period for Healthy Community Zones closes on June 1, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.

For questions or more information about the HCZ program, contact Alena Alberani, TOUCH Project Manager Healthy Eating and Active Living via email at: AAlberani@BRHPC.org.

WEBINAR: ROAD DIETS: IMPROVING SAFETY FOR ALL ROAD USERS

CHAPEL HILL, NC —  The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) announce a free webinar on road diets:

Road Diets: Improving Safety for All Road users
Tuesday, March 3, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time

To register, visit https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5767519393088781569

Road Diets, the conversion of four-lane undivided roadways to three lanes (two through lanes and a two-way-left-turn-lane), are listed as one the FHWA’s proven safety countermeasures.  This cross section reallocation can potentially improve safety, reduce speed differential, and/or improve accessibility for transit users, pedestrians and bicyclists. In November 2014, FHWA published the Road Diet Informational Guide to help communities understand Road Diets and their numerous benefits to all roadway users. The FHWA Guide can be downloaded by visiting http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/road_diets/info_guide/rdig.pdf.

Keith Knapp, Ph.D, P.E. (Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program) and Brian Chandler, P.E., PTOE (Leidos) were part of a team of practitioners who developed the guide and will serve as panelists for this webinar.  The session will provide an overview of the new guide and the basics of Road Diets. Participants will learn about the various safety and operational benefits of Road Diets and how to determine if they may be helpful in their location. All of the panelists will then participate in a closing discussion.

This webinar is one of the free webinars that FHWA offers quarterly as part of its Pedestrian Safety Focus States and Cities initiatives.  FHWA's Safety Office is trying to aggressively reduce pedestrian deaths by focusing extra resources on the states and cities with the highest pedestrian fatalities and/or fatality rates. Webinar archives for this series, as well as listings of upcoming sessions, can be found at http://www.pedbikeinfo.org/training/webinars_FHWA.cfm.

PBIC offers free, public Webinars approximately every other month. To register for upcoming Webinars and to access archived presentations, please visit http://www.pedbikeinfo.org/training/webinars.cfm.
